Are you looking for an activity that combines expression and fun for your 7 to 9-year-old?
Contemporary Dance Classes for children aged 7 to 9 in Penafiel introduce the fundamentals of dance in a playful, creative, and safe manner. The classes combine basic exercises for alignment and core, simple floor work, exploration of space and dynamics, with a focus on musicality and bodily expression.
Students learn to build small movement phrases, explore concepts of fluidity and balance, and develop body awareness in a fun way. The focus is on mobility, flexibility, and coordination, with gentle, age-appropriate physical conditioning.
More than just a physical activity, it is a safe and motivating space to grow in creativity, autonomy, and self-confidence. The methodology is ideal for those just starting out or for those who already have some movement foundation (e.g., ballet, recreational activities).
Book a trial class and discover how contemporary dance can boost your child's coordination, imagination, and holistic development in Penafiel.

1. What is the duration of the classes and the recommended frequency?
A: Classes last about 60 minutes, and attending 1 to 2 times per week is recommended to consolidate technique, rhythm, and develop creativity in a playful way.
2. What differentiates the Contemporary Dance classes for 7–9 year olds compared to the previous age group (3–6 years)?
A: Between 7 and 9 years old, children demonstrate greater focus and coordination. It is possible to introduce the fundamentals of the technique more structurally, work on alignment, simple floor work, and develop spatial and bodily awareness more consciously and creatively.
3. What are the main benefits of this practice for children this age?
A: Contemporary dance improves motor coordination, flexibility, and posture; it promotes discipline, concentration, and self-esteem; it encourages artistic expression and creativity, in addition to being an excellent way to develop social skills such as sharing and teamwork.
4. Is prior dance experience required?
A: No. Classes are open to beginners and to those who have attended other modalities (ballet, recreational activities). The methodology adapts to the level of each child, focusing on the exploration of movement.
5. What specific skills are worked on in the classes?
A: Students develop musicality, body awareness, movement exploration (fluidity, balance), the construction of small choreographic phrases, and playful improvisation.
6. What gear or clothing is recommended?
A: Comfortable clothing that allows complete freedom of movement (leggings, loose shorts or pants, and a t-shirt/leotard). Classes are done barefoot or with anti-slip socks. Bringing a water bottle is recommended.
7. How many students are usually in each class?
A: Class sizes are kept small to allow for close supervision and ensure individual attention for each student, without losing the richness of collective work.
8. How do these classes contribute to school and personal development?
A: Dance improves concentration, sequential memory, and discipline—skills useful in studying. On a personal level, it boosts confidence, helps manage emotions, and fosters social integration.
9. Is it possible to have a trial class before enrolling?
A: Yes. The school offers the possibility of a trial class, subject to class availability, for the child to get to know the teachers, the space, and the methodology.
10. What is the progression after age 9?
A: After this stage, students can join the Contemporary 10–12 years level (or the school's next age bracket), where the focus will be on technical deepening, alignment, and more structured choreographic composition.
11. Are there presentations or shows for this age group?
A: Yes. MissisDance organizes annual presentations and shows, where students display the work they have developed on stage, gain performance experience, and share their achievements with family and friends.
