GEMAC (Grupo de Esgrima Medieval e Artes de Combate) studies and practices HEMA based on the historical treatises of Fiore dei Liberi and Hans Talhoffer, with locations in Porto, Gaia, Espinho, Braga, and Guimarães. It organizes the Meeting de Esgrima Medieval in Porto every year and competes in the Liga Galega de Esgrima Antigua.
Classes are taught by Ricardo Macedo, founder and technical director of GEMAC. He holds a degree in Archaeology from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto and is a certified fencing instructor by the Portuguese Fencing Federation. He has taught Historical Fencing at CDUP since 2015 and is also a fencing coach at Sport Clube do Porto. Over the years he has worked as a historical consultant for exhibitions and film and television productions, and serves as Head Marshall in national historical fencing competitions.
