On the mat, you learn more than Jiu Jitsu. You learn never to give up.
Jiu Jitsu is a ground-based martial art that teaches you to overcome bigger and stronger opponents through technique, positioning and control. It is one of the most complete and effective martial arts — and one of the most transformative at a personal level.
In Aveiro, Escola Delariva de Jiu Jitsu offers training for all ages and levels — from children from age 4 to seniors — in a welcoming, technical and personally rewarding environment.
The first training session is a trial — no commitment. Come and feel the mat.

1. What exactly is Jiu Jitsu and how does it differ from other martial arts?
A: Jiu Jitsu is a martial art of Japanese origin, perfected in Brazil, that focuses on ground fighting — takedowns, immobilisations, joint locks and chokes. Unlike striking martial arts, Jiu Jitsu teaches you to control and submit opponents without the need for brute strength, making it effective for people of any size or age.
2. What is the Delariva Guard and why is it special?
A: The Delariva Guard is a ground fighting position created by Master Ricardo de la Riva in the 1980s — one of the most studied and used techniques in competitive Jiu Jitsu worldwide. Training at a school affiliated with Master Ricardo de la Riva guarantees faithful and high-quality technical instruction.
3. Is prior experience required to start?
A: No. Training sessions are open to all levels — from complete beginners to experienced practitioners. Teaching is progressive and adapted to each student's level, in a safe and welcoming environment.
4. From what age can students enrol?
A: Kids classes are available from age 4 — Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30 PM. For juniors and seniors, training begins from age 11, with morning and evening timetables available.
5. Is Jiu Jitsu suitable for women?
A: Yes. Jiu Jitsu is one of the most recommended martial arts for women precisely because it teaches you to overcome stronger opponents through technique and positioning — not physical strength. It is also an excellent tool for self-defence and self-confidence.
6. Is Jiu Jitsu dangerous? Can I get injured?
A: Like any contact sport, there is some risk of injury — but training sessions are always supervised and conducted with a focus on everyone's safety. Progression is gradual and students learn to control the intensity of training and respect their training partner.
7. Can I compete in tournaments after enrolling?
A: Yes. Escola Delariva has a strong competitive tradition and supports students who wish to participate in tournaments and championships. However, competition is always optional — many practitioners train exclusively for personal development and health.
8. How does the first trial training session work?
A: The first training session is free and with no commitment whatsoever. It is the ideal opportunity to get to know the space, the instructors and experience Jiu Jitsu before deciding to sign up. Simply contact us and show up.
9. How do I enrol?
A: You can enrol directly through the WOU registration form or contact us via WhatsApp. The first training session is free — there is no reason not to try!
