Stand up on the board. Take a deep breath. The river and the ocean are waiting for you.
Stand Up Paddle (SUP) is one of the most complete and accessible water activities in existence. Standing on a board with a paddle in hand, you glide over the water at your own pace — whether on the ocean or the Douro estuary — in an experience that is simultaneously physical, meditative and liberating.
In Vila Nova de Gaia, classes take place at Canide Sul Beach, every day, with instructors accredited by the Portuguese Surf Federation. Equipment and insurance included — just show up.

1. What exactly is Stand Up Paddle and how does it work?
A: Stand Up Paddle (SUP) is a water activity in which the practitioner stands on a board and uses a paddle to move across the water. It is a complete activity that combines balance, strength and endurance — and can be practised on the ocean, rivers, lakes or estuaries. In Vila Nova de Gaia, classes take place on the ocean and on the Douro estuary.
2. Is prior experience in surfing or other water activities required?
A: No. SUP is one of the most accessible water activities for beginners — it is easier to learn than surfing and requires no prior experience in water sports. Accredited instructors guide you from your very first steps until you feel comfortable on the board.
3. From what age can students take SUP classes?
A: Classes are available from age 7. The activity is suitable for all ages and physical conditions — the pace and intensity are always adapted to each practitioner.
4. Is equipment included in the price?
A: Yes. The board, paddle and insurance are included in the price of the class. There is no need to bring any equipment — just show up with appropriate clothing for the water.
5. Is it necessary to know how to swim to practise SUP?
A: It is recommended to know how to swim, but it is not mandatory. All practitioners wear a safety vest during the class — ensuring safety at all times.
6. What is the best time of year to practise Stand Up Paddle?
A: Classes are available every day of the year — from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, including weekends and public holidays. Summer is the most popular season, but SUP can be practised throughout the year with appropriate equipment.
7. Can I do SUP on the Douro estuary?
A: Yes. In addition to ocean classes at Canide Sul Beach, Fisherman Surf School offers Stand Up Paddle tours on the Douro Estuary — a unique experience with a privileged view of the cities of Porto and Gaia.
8. How do I enrol?
A: You can enrol directly through the WOU registration form or contact us via WhatsApp. Classes are available every day — choose the day that suits you best and show up.
